Jeremiah Dummer was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1823, and his son Charles, 1793-1872, was Deputy Director of Customs in New York from 1855-1857, and a "paper clerk" with the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. Charles also was Representative to the Maine Legislature in 1864. In 1867, Secretary of the Treasury, Adam McCulloch, sent Charles to London to study the "policy and practice of the British Excise Service."
